Anche se il titolo è “ il giovane marinaio , ” il modello per il dipinto era in realtà un 18 pescatore di anni di nome germain augustin barthelemy montarges . Il pezzo è stato dipinto a Matisse’s casa in coillioure , durante quella che doveva essere conosciuta come la sua estate fauvre , durante il quale aveva dipinto self-portraits quando convinse il giovane pescatore a posare per lui . il dipinto ora è appeso al metropolitan museum of art di new york , dove è uno dei dipinti più preziosi del museo .
